Human health risk assessment is written with the primary objective of protecting the public health. It is also written for the understanding of all stakeholders.
To satisfy these objectives, a review of the risk assessment before it is submitted to the management, regulator or other stakeholders, is best conducted by an independent third-party reviewer to address compliance with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance on risk assessment. A third-party review is also necessary to confirm if the protection of public health was fully and correctly considered in the risk assessment.
Ecological risk assessment is still an evolving field in risk assessment. Whether it is written for the protection of a stream, lake, sediment and terrestrial habitats, a review by a third-party with expertise on this field is imperative to provide a more acceptable risk evaluation for all stakeholders.
Vapor intrusion, which is defined by USEPA as the migration of volatile chemicals from the subsurface into overlying buildings, is a growing area in risk assessment. A reviewer with knowledge and experience on air toxics, hazardous waste site characterization, and human health risk assessment
will provide an excellent review on the acceptability
of vapor intrusion evaluation.
Human health and ecological risk assessment must be shared to the public who has the right to know about the health and ecological implications affecting their lives while living in or near a contaminated site. The risk communicator will work towards building a strong relationship between the stakeholders and will convey these complex information to the public in a language that is clear and understandable.
An effective communication strategy, facilitation and moderation of technical discussions among stakeholders can also be provided.
